What is the role of a councillor?
A parish councillor represents the views of all residents within the parish.
- Get involved with your community
- Have a say about the local issues people care about
- Influence local service delivery
- Decide how local money is spent to improve your community
- Bring about improvements through local projects
- Work in partnership with other parishes and agencies
Councillors will work closely with the Clerk, who is an employee of the Council as a whole, in delivering the agreed vision.
How much time does it take?
We meet formally ten times a year (normally the last Wednesday of a full week in the month at 7:30pm) for about two hours.
Councillors may also required to give time for ‘ad hoc’ tasks e.g. responding to emails, additional occasional meeting etc. It total it might take about to three to four hours a month, on average.
While the role is voluntary (i.e. unpaid), you are an elected member of the Council (even if co-opted).
You will be offered training and guidance on the role.
Are you eligible?
To be a councillor you must be;
- UK, Commonwealth or EU citizen
- at least 18 years old
- an elector of the parish (or in the past 12 months occupied land) or
- other premises in the parish or
- work in the parish or
- living within 3 miles of the parish boundary
